Saint Annie was a small, unincorporated community in Missouri, United States. It was located in the southwest part of Pulaski County. An unincorporated community means it wasn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

The community was originally about a mile south of a place called Cookville. The location of its post office changed over time, depending on where the postmaster lived. Eventually, the last post office was in Laclede County, near the border with Texas County.

A Look Back: Saint Annie's History

Early Days and the Post Office

Records show that Saint Annie first appeared in southwest Pulaski County. It was close to the Texas County line. The community was very near Cookville.

A post office was opened in Saint Annie in 1867. George Hume was the first person in charge of it. People think the community was named after a shorter version of the name of Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. This name might have been suggested by soldiers from Missouri who fought in the Mexican War.

Later, the post office moved to Laclede County. This area is now southwest of Fort Leonard Wood. Even after moving, it kept the name Saint Annie.

Community Life: Church and School

By the 1890s, Saint Annie had both a school and a church. The Saint Annie Baptist Church started in 1891. T. H. Bollenger was its first pastor. The church began with eleven members in November 1891.

Other early pastors helped lead the church in the years that followed. The Pulaski County Association of Baptist Churches held its yearly meeting at the Saint Annie church in 1895. They met in a grove near the Saint Annie School House.

During that 1895 meeting, two men, A. J. Riddle and James Roberson, became deacons for the church. The association met at Saint Annie again in 1911.

The Saint Annie schoolhouse was about a mile from the church. Children were being taught there by 1893. George Lane, Sr. was one of the early teachers.

A nearby post office called Bend closed in 1886. Its services were then moved to the Saint Annie Post Office. Christopher Myers was the postmaster at that time.

In 1895, Ben Crismon became the postmaster. His farm was next to the farms of previous Bend postmasters. For the last 36 years of its existence, the Saint Annie Post Office was in Laclede County. It was located in Ben Crismon's home.

This location was about six miles east of Nebo. It was also halfway between the post offices in Plato and Cookville. The Saint Annie post office officially closed on July 15, 1930. Its mail services were then sent to Cookville.

What Happened to Saint Annie?

In the 1930s, the Gulf Oil Company built a pumping station nearby. This was for a new pipeline. A community grew around this station, including homes, a store, and a school. This new place was called Gulf City. It was not the same as Saint Annie.

Both the Saint Annie church and school were on land that the government took. This land was used to create Fort Leonard Wood, a military base. The Saint Annie cemetery was also moved by the United States Army. It was relocated to the Bloodland Cemetery, which is also on Fort Leonard Wood.

The Saint Annie Baptist Church owned its building. It operated as a church until the land was taken for the Fort. The money the church received was used to buy a Baptist camp in Pulaski County. The bell from the church was placed on the lawn of the Pulaski County Courthouse in Waynesville.

The Saint Annie School building was brand new when it was taken down by the military. Today, only the remains of that school's foundation can be seen. The nearby cemetery of the Macedonia Christian Church is also a visible trace of the old Saint Annie community.
