Saint Kitts and Nevis at the Olympics
First Steps: The 1996 Summer Olympics
In 1996, Saint Kitts and Nevis made its Olympic debut. They sent ten athletes, which is the largest team they have ever sent to the Games. Two athletes, Kim Collins and Diane Francis, did very well. Kim Collins ran in the 100-meter sprint, and Diane Francis competed in the 400-meter dash. Both reached the quarterfinals of their events. However, they did not make it to the semifinals.
Other athletes from Saint Kitts and Nevis competed in relay races. The men's 4 × 100 relay team finished fourth in their race. The women's 4 × 100 relay team did not finish their race. The women's 4 × 400 relay team came in seventh. None of the relay teams moved on to the next round.
Small Team, Big Efforts: The 2000 Summer Olympics
For the 2000 Summer Olympics, Saint Kitts and Nevis sent only two athletes: one man and one woman. Both athletes performed strongly. Kim Collins reached the semifinals in both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints. He then made it to the finals of the 100-meter sprint, finishing seventh overall. Valma Bass also reached the semifinals in both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints, but she was eliminated there.
Collins's Return: The 2004 Summer Olympics
Again in 2004, Saint Kitts and Nevis sent one male and one female athlete to compete in athletics. Kim Collins once more reached the finals of the 100-meter race. He finished sixth in the 100-meter sprint. At 28 years old, Collins was the oldest athlete from Saint Kitts and Nevis at these Games. Tiandra Ponteen ran in the 400-meter dash. She advanced to the semifinals but did not make it to the finals.
More Athletes: The 2008 Summer Olympics
In 2008, Saint Kitts and Nevis sent four athletes: one man and three women. All of them competed in athletics. Kim Collins competed in two events. He was the only athlete from his country to reach a final. Collins finished sixth in the 200-meter race.
Challenges and Records: The 2012 Summer Olympics
Saint Kitts and Nevis sent seven athletes to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. However, two athletes faced issues before competing. Sprinter Tameka Williams was not allowed to compete. Kim Collins, who had been in every Olympics for his country, was also not allowed to compete by his Olympic committee. This was because he did not follow team rules about where athletes should stay.
Despite these challenges, the men's 4 × 100 meter relay team set a new national record for Saint Kitts and Nevis. The team included Antoine Adams, Delwayne Delaney, Brijesh Lawrence, Jason Rogers, and Lestrod Roland. They finished sixth in their race but did not advance to the next round.
Veteran Sprinter: The 2016 Summer Olympics
Seven athletes from Saint Kitts and Nevis participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics. The team captain was Antoine Adams. Kim Collins, at 40 years old, made history. He was the first 40-year-old to run the 100-meter dash in under 10 seconds. This was his fifth Olympic Games, and he was the oldest sprinter there. Collins advanced the furthest of any athlete from Saint Kitts and Nevis, reaching the semifinals of the 100-meter dash. He finished sixth in his heat and did not make it to the finals.
Recent Games: The 2020 Summer Olympics
For the 2020 Summer Olympics, Saint Kitts and Nevis sent two athletes: one man and one woman, both in athletics. Jason Rogers ran in the 100-meter sprint. He advanced to the semifinals but finished sixth and did not reach the finals. Amya Clarke also ran in the 100-meter sprint. She advanced to the first round but finished seventh and did not move on.
