Saintonge is a historic area located on the Atlantic coast of France. It is part of the larger region called Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Today, most of Saintonge is found within the French département (which is like a county or administrative area) called Charente-Maritime. It lies to the west and south of another département, Charente.
Saintonge gets its name from an ancient tribe called the Santones. These people were part of the Gallic tribes who lived in this area a very long time ago. The main city and capital of Saintonge is Saintes.
