Salas (also known as San Martin de Salas) is a town and a concejo (which means a local area or municipality) in the Principality of Asturias. This region is a special part of Spain. Salas is located along an old road that connects San Sebastián to Santiago de Compostela. It sits near a small river that flows into the river Narcea.
Salas is surrounded by other towns and areas. To the north, you'll find Valdés, Cudillero, and Pravia. To the south, it borders Belmonte de Miranda. To the east, it's next to Pravia, Candamo, and Grado. Finally, to the west, it shares borders with Tineo and Valdés.
This area of Salas is quite mountainous. The main jobs for people here are coal-mining and agriculture (farming). Products from this region are sent to Cudillero, which is a small harbor on the Bay of Biscay. Salas is also a popular place for tourists to visit. It is also famous as the birthplace of Fernando de Valdés y Salas, an important historical figure.
