Early Life and Education
Sally Eilers was born in New York City. Her mother, Paula Schoenberger, was Jewish-American. Her father, Hio Peter Eilers, was German-American and an inventor. Sally had one brother, Hio Peter Eilers Jr.
When Sally was young, her family moved to Los Angeles. She attended Fairfax High School and graduated in 1927.
Sally Eilers' Acting Career
Sally Eilers started her acting career in 1927. Her first movie was The Red Mill, directed by Roscoe Arbuckle. At first, she had small parts as an extra.
- Early Comedy Roles: In 1927 and 1928, she worked with director Mack Sennett. She became one of his "flaming youth" comedians. She often worked with Carole Lombard, who was a friend from school.
- WAMPAS Baby Star: In 1928, Sally was chosen as one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars. This was a special award given to promising young actresses. It helped them get more attention in Hollywood.
Sally was very popular in the early 1930s. People knew her for her lively and cheerful personality. She often appeared in comedies and crime movies. One famous film was Quick Millions (1931), where she acted alongside Spencer Tracy and George Raft.
By the end of the 1930s, her popularity began to decrease. She appeared in fewer movies after that. Her last film was Stage to Tucson in 1950.
Personal Life and Beliefs
Sally Eilers was married four times during her life. Her first husband was the Western actor Hoot Gibson. With her second husband, Harry Joe Brown, she had one son named Harry Joe Brown Jr. (1934–2006).
Sally lived in a beautiful mansion in Beverly Hills, California. The famous architect Paul R. Williams designed her home. She was a member of the Democratic Party. She supported Adlai Stevenson in the 1952 presidential election. Like her mother, Sally Eilers followed the Jewish faith.
Later Years and Death
In her final years, Sally Eilers had poor health. She passed away from a heart attack on January 5, 1978. She was 69 years old. She died in Woodland Hills, California.
After her death, Sally was cremated. Her remains were placed in a small space at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
