The Salmon Tower Building is a tall, 31-story building in New York City. You can find it at 11 West 42nd Street in Manhattan. It's very close to Bryant Park, a popular spot in the city.

This building was designed by Albert J. Wilcox. It was finished in 1928. A company led by Walter J. Salmon Sr. built it. Right next to the Salmon Tower Building is the old Aeolian Building. Also, 500 Fifth Avenue is nearby, which Walter J. Salmon Sr. also built.

Building History

How the Salmon Tower Building Was Built

Walter J. Salmon Sr. led a company called 11 West 42nd Street, Inc. This company was in charge of putting up the building. Albert J. Wilcox was the architect who designed it. The Salmon Tower Building was ready by early 1928. More than half of its office spaces were already rented out!

In 1928, the building was even used for politics. The New York City offices for electing Herbert Hoover as U.S. president were located here.

Important Events at the Building

In September 1941, the people who operated the elevators went on strike. This meant only 4 of the 18 elevators were working on September 25.

Later, in October 1952, a fire broke out in the building's lowest basement. Five firefighters breathed in too much smoke while putting it out.

Who Owns the Building Now?

The Salmon Tower Building was sold in June 1964. It had been owned by the Charles Frederick Hoffman family for over 60 years. Today, the building is owned by two companies: Tishman Speyer and Silverstein Properties. In 1980, these two companies worked together to give the building a big update.
