Carex hassei is a type of plant called a sedge. It's also known by the common name salt sedge. This plant grows naturally in western North America. You can find it from British Columbia in Canada, all the way down to Baja California in Mexico, and east to New Mexico. It likes to grow in wet places, such as grassy meadows.
What is Salt Sedge Like?
The salt sedge, Carex hassei, looks a lot like another plant called the golden sedge (Carex aurea). Sometimes, people even thought they were the same plant!
How Tall Does It Grow?
This sedge usually grows stems up to about 40 centimeters (about 16 inches) tall. Some plants might even grow a bit taller than that.
Its Flowers and Fruit
The plant has a special flower cluster called an inflorescence. This cluster has a long, leaf-like part called a bract. This bract is actually longer than the flower spikes themselves! The small flowers have scales that are reddish-brown with white tips. After the flowers, the plant produces fruit. Each fruit is covered in a special casing called a perigynium. This casing feels fleshy and a bit bumpy, and it's usually light in color.
