The Salzkammergut is a beautiful area in Austria known for its many lakes and mountains. It stretches from the city of Salzburg all the way to the Dachstein mountain range. The main river flowing through this region is the Traun.

The name Salzkammergut means "Estate of the Salt Chamber." This name comes from a group called the Imperial Salt Chamber. They were in charge of the very important salt mines during the time of the Habsburg empire. Salt was a precious resource back then!

With its stunning natural beauty, the Salzkammergut offers many fun activities. You can enjoy water sports on the lakes, go bathing, or explore the area by hiking and cycling. There are also places to play golf.

Some parts of the Salzkammergut, especially around the town of Hallstatt, were recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1997. This means they are considered very important to the world's history and culture. The World Heritage Site includes the towns of Hallstatt, Obertraun, Gosau, and Bad Goisern.
