Some of his most famous roles include Sam Gorpley in Perfect Strangers and Principal Willis DeWitt in Growing Pains. He also played Holland Manners in Angel and Bernard Nadler in Lost. In movies, he is remembered as the principal in Forrest Gump.

Sam Anderson was born in Clark, South Dakota. He grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota. He studied American literature and creative writing. He earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of North Dakota and the University of Wisconsin. In the 1970s, he taught drama. He worked as a drama teacher at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, California.
