The Story of Sam Born
Early Life and Moving to America
Sam Born was born Samuel Bernstein in a place called Vinnitsia, which was part of the Russian Empire (now Vinnytsia in Ukraine). His family was Jewish.
In December 1909, when Sam was 18, his family moved to the United States. He traveled across the ocean on a ship named the S/S Merion. The ship sailed from Liverpool to Philadelphia. On the ship's list of passengers, his job was written down as "candy maker."
A Sweet Invention
Sam Born was not just a candy maker; he was also an inventor! In 1916, he created a special machine. This machine could automatically put sticks into lollipops. Before his invention, this was all done by hand.
His invention was a big deal! The city of San Francisco even gave him the "key to the city" to thank him. This is a special honor given to important people.
Starting a Candy Company
In 1923, Sam Born started his own candy company. He called it Just Born. He started this company in Brooklyn, New York.
His company quickly became known for making delicious candies. Later, in 1932, he moved the company to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Famous Candies
The Just Born company still makes many candies that you might know and love today. These include:
- Peeps: These are soft, marshmallow candies shaped like chicks and bunnies, especially popular around Easter.
- Mike and Ike: These are chewy, fruit-flavored candies.
- Hot Tamales: These are spicy, cinnamon-flavored candies.
Later Life and Legacy
Sam Born lived a life full of sweet success. In March 1959, he was on a world cruise with his wife. They were on a ship called the Cunard liner, Britannic. Sam Born passed away while the ship was at sea, traveling from Lisbon to Southampton.
His company, Just Born, continues to make popular candies today. Sam Born's inventions and business ideas helped create some of America's favorite treats.
