Samuel Lee Gash Jr. (born March 7, 1969) is a former American football player. He played as a fullback in the National Football League (NFL). Before turning pro, he played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Sam Gash's Playing Career

Sam Gash was chosen by the New England Patriots in the 1992 NFL draft. He was picked in the eighth round. A fullback's main job is to block for other players. They also catch passes and sometimes run with the ball.

Gash played for twelve years in the NFL. He was a two-time Pro Bowler. This means he was chosen as one of the best players in the league. He played for the Patriots from 1992 to 1997.

Later, he joined the Buffalo Bills from 1998 to 1999. He returned to the Bills in 2003. He also played for the Baltimore Ravens from 2000 to 2002.

In 1999, Gash made history. He was the first player to be picked for the Pro Bowl without running with the ball even once during the season. This shows how important his blocking skills were.

He won a Super Bowl in 2000 with the Baltimore Ravens. The Super Bowl is the championship game of the NFL. Gash's last team was the New Orleans Saints in 2004.

Sam Gash as a Coach

After his playing career, Sam Gash became a football coach. He started coaching in 2005. His first coaching job was with the New York Jets. He was an assistant coach for running backs.

In 2007, Gash moved to the Detroit Lions. He worked as an assistant coach for special teams. Special teams handle plays like kickoffs and punts. In 2008, he became the main running backs coach for the Lions. He stayed with them until 2012.

On February 10, 2014, Gash became the running backs coach for the Green Bay Packers. He coached for the Packers for two seasons. He left the team in January 2016.

Sam Gash's Family Life

Sam Gash has family members who also play football. His younger brother, Eric Gash, played outside linebacker in college. He played for the University of North Carolina. In 2014, Eric became the head coach at his old high school, Hendersonville High School.

The Gash brothers have a cousin named Thane Gash. Thane played safety in the NFL. He played for the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers.

Sam's son, Isaiah, plays college football for the Michigan Wolverines. Another son, Elijah, played college lacrosse for the Albany Great Danes. Elijah was drafted into the Premier Lacrosse League in 2023. He was also drafted into the National Lacrosse League in 2023.
