Samuel Harrison Mattis, born on March 19, 1994, is an American athlete who competes in track and field. He is known for his skill in the discus throw event. His best personal throw is 68.69 meters. Mattis competed for the United States at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he finished 11th. He also represented the United States in the Men's discus throw at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Sam Mattis was born in Manhattan, New York City. His parents are Marlon and Marcie Mattis. His mother is Jewish. His father, Marlon, was born in Jamaica and moved to New York when he was a child. Sam has a brother named Jake. Jake also went to the University of Pennsylvania. Sam's father was a captain of the William & Mary track and field team in 1985. He held a record in the 35-pound weight throw.

Mattis grew up in East Brunswick, New Jersey. He went to East Brunswick High School. This is where he began competing in discus throw events as a teenager. He later studied at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned a degree in Finance and Operations Management. Sam Mattis is 6 feet 1 inch tall. He lives in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania.

Sam Mattis's Sports Career

Sam Mattis started winning big competitions early in his career. He won the 2011 New Jersey Meet of Champions. He also won the 2012 New Balance Nationals in the discus throw.

College Achievements

Mattis competed for the University of Pennsylvania Quakers during his four years in college. He won a gold medal at the 2015 NCAA National Championships. His throw of 67.45 meters at the 2016 Philadelphia College Classic set an American Collegiate record. This was the second-best throw ever by a college student at that time.

Mattis also received three NCAA All-American honors. He was named the USATFCCA/NCAA National Scholar of the Year. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association chose him as the 2015 Male Scholar Athlete of the Year for Division I. He won the Heps Outdoor Champion title in the discus throw four times. He also received First-Team All-Ivy honors for each of his four outdoor seasons.

Olympic and World Competitions

Mattis won a gold medal at the 2019 Outdoor USA Track and Field Championships. His winning throw was 218 feet 9 inches. At the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, in 2019, he finished 11th. In June 2021, Mattis became an Olympian. He earned this spot by finishing in the top three at the 2020 United States Track and Field Olympic Trials. He then competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he placed 11th.

In July 2023, Mattis won another gold medal in the discus throw. This was at the 2023 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. His throw was 65.93 meters (216 feet 3 inches). He also won a silver medal at the 2023 Doha Diamond League in Doha, Qatar, with a throw of 64.69 meters. In 2024, he won a silver medal at the 2024 United States Olympic trials. His throw was 66.07 meters (216 feet 9 inches).

2024 Paris Olympics

Sam Mattis represented the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He competed in the Men's discus throw event. The competition took place at Stade de France.

Sam Mattis has been recognized for his achievements. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
