Samuel Austin Querrey (born October 7, 1987) is an American professional pickleball player. He used to be a professional tennis player.

Sam Querrey was known for his very strong serve in tennis. He even holds a record for hitting 10 aces in a row during a match! He reached his highest singles ranking of world No. 11 in February 2018. He won 10 singles titles and 5 doubles titles in his tennis career.

One of his biggest achievements was reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2017. He beat the world No. 1 player, Andy Murray, to get there. This made him the first American man in eight years to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. The year before, at Wimbledon 2016, he also beat the world No. 1, Novak Djokovic, ending Djokovic's long winning streak in Grand Slams.

Sam also reached the quarterfinals at the US Open in 2017 and the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2019. He played in the Davis Cup for the United States team and reached the semifinals three times.

Early Life and Start in Tennis

Sam Querrey was born in San Francisco, California. He went to Thousand Oaks High School and finished in 2006.

After high school, Sam decided to become a professional tennis player. He turned down a scholarship offer from the University of Southern California (USC). His father, Mike Querrey, encouraged him to play tennis professionally.

Tennis Career Highlights

Sam Querrey started his professional tennis career in 2006. He quickly showed his talent.

First Big Wins

In 2006, Sam won his first professional tournament in Yuba City. He also played in his first Grand Slam, the US Open, where he won his first match.

In 2007, he reached the third round of the 2007 Australian Open. He also made it into the top 50 players in the world. A cool moment that year was when he hit 10 aces in a row during a match in Indianapolis. This is believed to be a record!

Winning ATP Titles

Sam won his first ATP tournament title in 2008 in Las Vegas. He continued to win more titles over the years.

In 2009, he won the LA Tennis Open in Los Angeles. This was his second ATP title.

The year 2010 was a great one for Sam. He won four titles, including the Memphis Open and the Queen's Club Championships in London. Winning at Queen's Club was special because it was his first title on grass courts. He also became the first player in 2010 to win titles on three different types of court surfaces.

Sam won his seventh ATP title in 2012 at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles. He also had a big win against Novak Djokovic at the BNP Paribas Masters that year.

Grand Slam Success

Sam Querrey had some of his best Grand Slam performances later in his career.

In 2016, at Wimbledon, he caused a huge upset by beating Novak Djokovic. Djokovic was the world No. 1 and had won all four major Grand Slam titles in a row. Sam then reached the quarterfinals, which was his best Grand Slam result at the time.

The next year, 2017, was even better. Sam won the Mexican Open by beating Rafael Nadal, another former world No. 1 player. Then, at Wimbledon, he reached the semifinals after beating Andy Murray, who was the world No. 1 at the time. This was his best Grand Slam performance ever. He also reached the quarterfinals of the US Open that year.

Later Career and Retirement

Sam continued to play tennis, reaching a few more finals in 2018 and 2019. In 2021, he reached the semifinals of the US Open in men's doubles with his friend Steve Johnson.

Sam Querrey announced his retirement from professional tennis in August 2022. He played his last matches at the US Open.

Playing Style

Sam Querrey played with his right hand and used a two-handed backhand. He was famous for his incredibly powerful serve, which was one of the best on the tennis tour.

Throughout his career, Sam used different tennis rackets. He played with Babolat rackets. His clothing and shoes were sponsored by companies like Adidas and Fila.

Pickleball Career

After retiring from tennis, Sam Querrey started playing professional pickleball. In August 2023, he signed with Vibe Pickleball to play on the PPA Tour, showing his talent in another sport.
