Samborondon is a town and a type of local district called a parish in Ecuador. It is located in the Guayas province. Samborondon is the main town of the Samborondón Canton. A canton is like a county or a larger district.

The Samborondón Canton includes 105 smaller areas. These areas have two main city parts: La Puntilla and Samborondón Town. There is also one countryside area called Tarifa. La Puntilla is known as a very fancy area with many homes and fun places. It has many gated communities and shopping centers. Many people who live here work in Guayaquil, Ecuador's biggest city. Guayaquil is just across a bridge. Many wealthy families from Guayaquil live in La Puntilla.

History of Samborondon

Samborondon was first started on May 24, 1776. It became independent on October 10, 1822. Since October 31, 1955, Samborondon has been its own canton.

The name Samborondon comes from a saint named Brendan. In Spanish, his name is "San Borondón." This name was often used for towns and villages in Spain and later in Latin America.

When people say "Samborondón," they often mean the fancy area called La Puntilla. But Samborondon is actually much bigger than just La Puntilla. La Puntilla is a piece of land shaped like a finger, called a peninsula. It is located between the Babahoyo and Daule rivers. These two rivers come together to form the Guayas River.

Shopping and Fun Places

Samborondon has many places to shop and have fun.

  • The Riocentro Entrerios is a big shopping center. It has many stores, a huge supermarket, a food court, and a movie theater.
  • The Village Plaza opened in August 2010. It has a Supermaxi supermarket and many other stores.
  • There are also smaller shopping centers. These include Bocca, La Piazza, La Torre, Las Terrazas, Plaza Lagos, Alhambra, Piazza, and Plaza Navona. They mostly have fancy restaurants, gyms, nightclubs, and shops.

One of the best theaters in Ecuador, the Teatro Sánchez Aguilar, is also in this area.

Visiting Samborondon

Samborondon has some great places to visit.

  • The Parque Histórico is a special park. It is like a botanical garden and a zoo. You can see local plants and animals there. It also has old buildings that have been rebuilt to show history. It is a major attraction for people visiting Guayaquil.

There is a small, fancy hotel called Orilla del Rio in Entrerios. It is very close to Guayaquil, only about 5 minutes by car. This makes it easy for visitors, except during busy times like 7-8 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.

Samborondon also has the most exclusive nightclubs in the Guayaquil area. There are three restaurant complexes with unique and fancy food that you might not find elsewhere.

Education in Samborondon

Because more and more people are moving to Samborondon, many schools have opened new campuses here. Some schools have even moved from Guayaquil and Quito. Most of these are private schools.

  • Some of the private schools include Colegio Menor, Abdon Calderon, Torremar, and Delta. Others are Nuevo Mundo, Liceo Panamericano, Moderna Sergio Pérez Valdez, Centro Educativo Naciones Unidas, La Moderna, CREAR, and Monte Tabor.
