What is Samos Like?

Samos is found among the eastern mountains of Galicia. These include the Lóuzara, Serra do Oribio, and Albola mountains. The area is generally high up, with an average height of over 700 meters. The tallest point is O Oribio mountain, which reaches 1,443 meters!

Rivers and Landscapes

Two main rivers flow through Samos. The Sarria River collects water from the western side of the mountains. It then flows into the Miño River. The Lóuzara River drains the eastern slopes, eventually joining the Lor River and then the Sil River.

Samos has three different types of landscapes:

  • A central area where most people live.
  • A northern part that is more open and has gentle slopes.
  • Lóuzara, the southern area, which is full of mountains and valleys.

Weather in Samos

The weather in Samos can change a lot between day and night, and between seasons. Winters are cold, and the fields often freeze. The area gets a good amount of rain, usually between 900 and 1,500 millimeters each year. The whole municipality covers about 136 square kilometers.

Samos is set in a beautiful natural valley that leads into the Pedrafita mountains. The Oribio River flows through this valley. This small river is home to many eels and trout, which are popular local dishes. The natural beauty makes it a great place to explore.

History and Culture

The village of Samos is about 11 kilometers from Sarria and 45 kilometers from Lugo. It is home to a very important religious building called the Real Abadía de Samos. This is a Benedictine monastery also known as San Xulián de Samos.

The Famous Abbey

The abbey is one of the most important religious places in Galicia. It dates back to the sixth century! This was a time when the Swabian people lived in what is now Galicia. Many pilgrims walking the Way of St. James to Compostela often stop in Samos to visit this ancient abbey and monastery. There is even a special place for pilgrims to stay for free at the Royal Benedictine Abbey of St. Julian of Samos.
