History of Sampson
Early Land Surveys
The land that is now Sampson was first measured in June 1852. This was done by a team working for the U.S. government. They used tools like a chain and a compass. Their job was to map out the area.
Later that year, other teams marked the corners of each section. These sections are like square parts of land. They walked through forests and swamps to complete their work.
What the Surveyors Found
After their survey, the team described the western part of Sampson. They noted many small ponds with clear water. These ponds had sandy or gravel bottoms and were full of fish. A trail to Lake Superior also ran through this area. West of the trail, they found a large swamp. Most of this area was covered with pine and other hardwood trees.
Another team surveyed the eastern part of the town. They also found many lakes and swamps. The dry land here mainly had pine, maple, and birch trees. They said the soil on dry land was "2d Rate," meaning it was okay for farming. However, the swampy areas were not good for growing crops.
How Sampson Got Its Name
The town of Sampson was named after Rear Admiral William T. Sampson. He was a famous hero from the Spanish–American War.
