Samuel Crothers (born October 22, 1783 – died July 20, 1855) was an important American minister. He was a Presbyterian minister, which is a type of Christian leader. He was also a writer and spoke out strongly against slavery. He believed slavery was wrong and fought against it his whole life.

Samuel Crothers: A Life Against Slavery

Samuel Crothers was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, in 1783. When he was about four years old, his family moved to Kentucky. He lived there until 1804.

Early Life and Education

In 1804, Samuel Crothers moved to New York to study. He attended a special school called a theological seminary. This is where people learn to become ministers. His teacher was Dr. John M. Mason.

After finishing his training in 1809, Crothers was allowed to preach. He soon became a pastor for two churches in Ohio. These were the Associate Reformed Church in Chillicothe, Ohio, and the Hop Run Church near Greenfield. By 1813, he focused all his time on the Hop Run Church. In 1818, Crothers joined the Presbyterian Church. He returned to Greenfield in 1820 to help start the Greenfield Presbyterian Church.

Speaking Out Against Slavery

Samuel Crothers is well-known for spending much of his life fighting against slavery. He wrote and spoke out against people who used the Bible to support slavery. He published many articles in the Quarterly Anti-slavery Magazine.

Crothers was a respected thinker and debater. He even debated important religious leaders of his time, like Charles Hodge. One of his famous works was "An Appeal to Patriots and Christians, in Behalf of Enslaved Africans." This was a series of fifteen letters published in the Cincinnati Journal. He also wrote books, including The Gospel of the Jubilee and The Life of Abraham.
