Samuel Joseph Churchill (born November 1, 1842, died June 3, 1932) was an American soldier. He fought bravely in the American Civil War. Churchill received the Medal of Honor, the country's highest award for bravery during combat. He earned this award for his actions during the Battle of Nashville in Tennessee on December 15, 1864. He was given this special honor on January 20, 1897.

His Early Life and Military Service
Samuel Joseph Churchill was born in Rutland, Vermont, on November 1, 1842. When he was older, he joined the army. He became part of Battery G, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery. This happened in DeKalb County, Illinois.
During a break from his military service, he went back to Vermont. There, he married Adelia Augusty Holmes on May 4, 1863. Soon after, he returned to his army unit. He was then promoted to the rank of corporal.
Life After the War
After the Civil War ended, Churchill moved to different places. First, he lived in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Later, he moved to Lawrence, Kansas.
In 1901, Churchill wrote a book. It was called Genealogy and Biography of the Connecticut Branch of the Churchill Family in America. In this book, he shared his experiences from the Civil War.
Samuel Churchill passed away on June 3, 1932. He was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas. The Army Reserve Training Center in Lawrence, Kansas, is named in his honor today. You can learn more about it here: Army Reserve Training Center.
