Exploring San Benigno Canavese

San Benigno Canavese has some cool historical places to visit. These sights tell stories from long ago. Let's take a look at what makes this town special.

Historical Buildings and Art

The town is home to ancient structures and beautiful artwork. They show what life was like centuries ago.

Fruttuaria Abbey: A Thousand-Year-Old History

The Fruttuaria Abbey was built way back in the year 1003. An abbey is a special building where monks used to live and pray. Most of the original Romanesque building is gone now. But you can still see its old bell tower standing tall. It's a reminder of its long history.

The Amazing Griffons Mosaic

Inside the abbey, you can find the famous Griffons Mosaic. A mosaic is a picture or pattern made from small pieces of colored stone or glass. This mosaic is considered one of the most important examples of mosaic art in the whole Piedmont region. It shows griffons, which are mythical creatures with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle.

The Ricetto: A Medieval Fortified Store

Another interesting place is the Ricetto. This was a fortified area built in the 15th century. Think of it as a strong, walled-off storage area. People used it to keep their valuable goods safe. Today, you can still see one of its three original gates and a corner tower. These parts give you an idea of how strong it once was.

Getting Around: The Railway Station

San Benigno Canavese also has its own San Benigno Canavese railway station. This makes it easy for people to travel to and from the town by train.
