San Cibrao (also known as San Ciprián in Spanish) is a cool town in Northwestern Spain. It's part of Cervo, which is both a town and a local government area in the Lugo Province. San Cibrao is known for its factories and fishing.

About 2,000 people live here all year. But in July and August, when it's summer, the population grows to about 3,000!

San Cibrao's Busy Port

San Cibrao has a very important port. It's used for three main things:

  • SymbolNauticMarked
Commercial ships come and go here.
Commercial Port: This is where big ships bring goods in and out.
  • SymbolNauticFisher
Fishing boats bring in their catch.
Fishing Port: Many fishing boats use this port to bring in their daily catch.
  • SymbolNauticDeport
You can find pleasure boats here.
Sport Port: This part of the port is for smaller boats used for fun, like sailing or pleasure cruises.

History and Fun Things to Do

Long ago, during the Middle Ages, cool sailing ships called caravels were built right here in San Cibrao's port.

Today, the town's economy mostly depends on fishing and a large aluminium factory owned by a company called Alcoa.

Even though not many tourists visit, the area is great for surfing and other water sports. Why? Because the nearby peninsula has beautiful sandy beaches. Strong winds blow from the northeast during winter, making the waves perfect for surfing. This is true for much of the coast in this region, including parts of Asturias and the Basque Country.

Part of San Cibrao is on a piece of land called the "Peace Peninsula" (Peninsula de la Paz). It's surrounded by the Cantabrian Sea. In summer, the water here can get as warm as 18°C (about 64°F). There are five beaches in this area where you can relax and play.

You might have heard about the Prestige oil spill that happened in 2004. But don't worry! The fish, shellfish, and seafood businesses in San Cibrao are no longer affected by it.

The Maruxaina Festival

One of the most exciting events in San Cibrao is the A Maruxaina festival. It happens every year on the second Saturday of August. This festival is based on a local legend about a siren who lives on some small islands called Os farallons, close to San Cibrao. It's so special that it has been recognized as a National Cultural Interest!

During the festival, most people in town dress up as Maruxainos. These are costumes that look like clothes from a long time ago. At noon, sailors pretend to bring the siren from the islands to the shore. Then, in front of the museum, they hold a pretend trial to decide if the Maruxaina (the siren) is good or bad. After this fun trial, everyone gets to try a special drink called "Queimada".

Main Industries

San Cibrao has a few important industries that help the town thrive:

  • Aluminium Production: There's a big factory here that refines bauxite into alumina, which is used to make aluminium. This factory is owned by Alcoa.
  • Fishing: The town has a busy fishing port where many people work.
  • Pottery: Close by, in Cervo, is The Royal Factory of Sargadelos. It started in 1791 and is one of the oldest and most famous places in Galicia for making beautiful pottery. You can even visit it!
