Who Designed and Built the Bridge?
The San Jorge Bridge was designed by architect Víctor Eusa. Engineers Carmelo Monzón Reparaz and Vicente Redón also helped with the design. Another civil engineer, Alfonso Peña Boeuf, helped during the building process.
How Big is the San Jorge Bridge?
The bridge is very long, measuring 245 meters (about 804 feet). It stands 45.40 meters (about 149 feet) above the Riquer river. The bridge is in the middle of Alcoy, connecting the old part of the city with a new area called Horta Major.
When Was the Bridge Built?
People started planning a large bridge for Alcoy in the late 1800s, with ideas appearing in 1876. However, the actual building work did not begin until the summer of 1923. A company from Navarre called Erroz and San Martín was given the job.
Construction officially started in 1925. The builders used reinforced concrete, a strong material, and followed the Art Deco style. The main supports of the bridge are made of large, cut stones and masonry.
The city of Alcoy paid for the bridge. It cost 1,336,824 pesetas and took six years to build. The San Jorge Bridge was officially opened on March 26, 1931.
