Population Growth
San José has grown a lot over the years! In 1900, only 687 people lived there. By 2010, the population had grown to 2,986 people. This shows how the community has expanded over time.
History of San José
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the U.S.
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census (a count of the population) of Puerto Rico. They found that the population of San José barrio was 687 people at that time.
