San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station facts for kids
The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (often called SONGS) was a very large power plant in the United States. It was located in San Diego County, California. This plant had two big units that could each make 1,100 megawatts of power. SONGS started making electricity in 1968.
Power for Many Homes
SONGS was a huge source of electricity for its area. It could produce 2,200 megawatts of power. This was enough electricity to power about 1.4 million homes in Southern California.
Built for Safety: Earthquakes
The power station was designed to be very strong. It was built to survive a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.0. Scientists knew about a fault line in the ocean, about 5 miles away. This fault could potentially cause a tsunami that might reach the plant.
