About San Ramón's Population
To understand how many people live in San Ramón, a special count called a census is done. The National Statistics Institute in Chile collects this information.
Population Numbers
In 2002, the census showed that San Ramón covers about 6.5 square kilometers (about 2.5 square miles). At that time, 94,906 people lived there. Out of these, 46,596 were men and 48,310 were women.
San Ramón is a completely urban area, meaning everyone lives in the city, not in the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in San Ramón went down by about 5.9%.
How San Ramón is Governed
San Ramón is a "commune," which is a local area with its own government. This government is run by a municipal council. The council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.
Local Leaders
The alcalde for the years 2012-2016 was Miguel Ángel Aguilera Sanhueza, who belonged to the Socialist Party.
The communal council also had several members who helped make decisions for the city. These members included:
- Mónica Aguilera Sanhueza (Socialist Party of Chile)
- Genaro Balladares Schwaner (Christian Democratic Party)
- Claudia Lange Farias (Independent Democratic Union)
- Sylvia Reyes Terán (Christian Democratic Party)
- Max Pardo Ramirez (Communist Party of Chile)
- Julio Soto Martinez (Independent Regionalist Party)
- Roxana Riquelme Tabach (Socialist Party of Chile)
- Manuel Arzola Bustamante (Party for Democracy)
Representing the Community
People from San Ramón are also represented in the larger government of Chile. They have representatives in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. These are like the two main parts of the country's law-making body. These representatives speak for the people of San Ramón and other nearby areas.
