Sanborn's bonneted bat (Eumops hansae) is a type of bat found in parts of South and Central America. It was first discovered in Brazil in 1932. This is why it is sometimes called the Hansa bonneted bat, named after the place it was found.

What Does Sanborn's Bonneted Bat Look Like?

Sanborn's bonneted bat is one of the smaller kinds of bonneted bats. It measures about 10 centimeters (4 inches) long, including its tail. These bats are quite light, weighing between 13 to 17 grams (about half an ounce).

They have dark, blackish-brown fur. Their fur is a bit lighter on their belly. This helps tell them apart from other similar-sized bats in the same areas. Sanborn's bonneted bats also have narrow wing tips. Their teeth at the back of their jaw are strong. Like other bats in the Molossidae family, their tail sticks out past their wing membranes. In this species, the tail is usually about 3 to 4 centimeters (1 to 1.5 inches) long.

Where Do These Bats Live and What Do They Do?

Sanborn's bonneted bats are found in different spots across Central America. You can also find them in the very southern tip of Mexico. In South America, they live in the northern parts of the continent. This includes countries like Colombia, Venezuela, the Guyanas, western Brazil, eastern Peru, Ecuador, and northern Bolivia.

These bats prefer to live in lowland tropical evergreen forests. They are usually found below about 320 meters (1,050 feet) in elevation.

Sanborn's bonneted bats eat insects, especially Orthopterans. They catch these insects while flying high up in the forest canopy. They have also been seen flying over open areas and large bodies of water. These bats like to rest and sleep in hollows or holes inside trees.
