Sandhikharka (Nepali: सन्धिखर्क नगरपालिका) is an important town in Nepal. It's the main center of Arghakhanchi District, located in the Lumbini Province. This town was formed on May 18, 2014. It was created by combining several smaller village areas. These included the original Sandhikharka, Wangla, Narapani, Khanchikot, Kimadada, Argha, and Dibharna villages. Sandhikharka is nestled in a valley, surrounded by hills. It lies to the west of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal.

Three small rivers meet in Sandhikharka. They are called the Bangi, Ghoche, and Bhadri rivers. They all come together at a place called Chutrabeshi. Because of this, people sometimes call these rivers "Tribeni," which means "three rivers."

A Look into Sandhikharka's Past

How Sandhikharka Got Its Name

Many years ago, this area was covered with wild grasses. These grassy lands were called "Kharka." Farmers would bring their cattle here to graze. This area was also a border between two small kingdoms: Argha and Khanchi. These were part of the Chaubisi rajya, which were 24 small kingdoms.

The kings of Argha and Khanchi often argued about who owned the land. Later, they decided to make a peace agreement. "Sandhi" is a word that means a formal agreement or treaty between states. So, the two kingdoms made a treaty for the "Kharka" land. This is how the town got its name, Sandhikharka. It became the main town of Arghakhanchi District.

Challenges During the Maoist Insurgency

On September 8, 2002, Sandhikharka faced a big challenge. There was a large conflict between government forces and armed groups. These groups were part of the Maoist movement. Reports said that many rebels attacked the town. They fought against the police and army. After a few hours, the rebels took control.

They set fire to almost all government buildings, except for the hospital. Many of these buildings were never rebuilt. This event caused a lot of sadness and damage in the town.

Another attack happened on September 10, 2002. During this time, a telecommunication tower was destroyed. The government sent more help by helicopter to protect the town. These events were very difficult for the people of Sandhikharka.

Later Events in 2005

The Maoist groups launched another attack on March 4, 2005. However, this time, the Nepali military was ready. They fought back strongly. The military reported that many rebels were stopped. There were no casualties among the troops.

After the rebels retreated, the military found some simple bombs and equipment. Even with this success, the King of Nepal, Gyanendra of Nepal, declared a state of emergency. He also limited what the news could report. The military released a statement about the fighting. They said that the rebels fled after strong resistance from the security forces.
