History of Sandston
The Battle of Seven Pines
A very important event in American history happened near Sandston. This was the Battle of Seven Pines in 1862. It was a major battle during the American Civil War.
This battle had many soldiers injured or killed. It was one of the biggest battles up to that time. The fighting was very tough, and neither side truly won.
However, the battle changed the war's direction. The Confederate General, Joseph E. Johnston, was hurt.

After his injury, President Jefferson Davis chose Robert E. Lee to lead the Confederate armies. Lee then started the Seven Days Battles. These battles forced the Northern forces to retreat in June. This was the closest the North had come to Richmond, Virginia during that attack.
How Sandston Got Its Name
During World War I, many homes were built in this area. These homes were for soldiers, both officers and enlisted men. After the war, an investment group bought these homes and the land.
This group was led by a man named Oliver J. Sands. The community was later named Sandston after him. Oliver Sands was the president of the Richmond and Fairfield Railway. This was an electric street railway line. It ran through nearby towns like Highland Springs and Fair Oaks. The line ended at the National Cemetery in Seven Pines.
Transportation in Sandston
Later, the Fairfield Transit Company served the community. This company operated buses. They had a bus barn in Seven Pines. Before that, there was a trolley car barn in Richmond.
The main road from Richmond to Seven Pines was called "Nine Mile Road." This name came from how long the streetcar or trolley line was.
Today, Richmond International Airport is located in Sandston. This airport connects Sandston to many places.
