Sanger is a very small place in Oliver County, North Dakota. It's what we call an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Today, Sanger is almost a ghost town. In 2023, only two people lived there! There are no shops or services left.
Sanger is located about 40 miles north of Bismarck. It's also very close to the west bank of the Missouri River. You can find a sign on the highway that points the way to Sanger.
About Sanger
Sanger started in 1879. It was first known as Bentley. The community was renamed Sanger in 1884. This was also the year it stopped being the county seat. A county seat is like the main town in a county. It's where the local government offices are located.
Sanger was never a very big place. It slowly became smaller during the 20th century. By 1985, the town was completely empty.
A Local Heroine
Sanger is most famous for being the birthplace of Hazel Miner. She was a local heroine. A heroine is a brave person who does something amazing. Hazel is remembered for saving her younger brother and sister. She protected them during a terrible snowstorm in 1920. This storm was known as the 1920 North Dakota blizzard. Hazel gave her own life to keep her siblings safe. Her story shows how strong and caring she was.
