Santa Fe is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the country of Honduras. It is part of the Ocotepeque area. In 2015, about 5,006 people lived there.

History of Santa Fe

Santa Fe was started in 1860 by people who moved from a nearby town called Concepción. This town is about 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) to the east.

The village was first named El Tablón del Guayabo. This name meant "The Board of Guayabo" because there were many guava fruit trees in the area. Later, its name was changed to Santa Fe.

In 1887, when people counted the population, Santa Fe was officially recognized as one of the towns in the Ocotepeque Department.

Geography and Location

Santa Fe is a town built on a hill. It is close to the Lempa River. The town is about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) southeast of the border with Guatemala. This border crossing is at a place called Agua Caliente.

Santa Fe is also about 19 kilometers (11.8 miles) north of the border with El Salvador. This border is near a town called Citalá.

The town is 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) away from Ocotepeque. Ocotepeque is the main city of the department. Santa Fe is also 19 kilometers (11.8 miles) from Esquipulas, a town in Guatemala.

Villages in Santa Fe

The municipality of Santa Fe is made up of eight different parts. These include the main town of Santa Fe and seven other smaller villages.

  • Los Encinos
  • Piedras Bonitas
  • Piñuelas
  • Sulnete

Population and People

In 2013, a count of the people in Honduras showed that Santa Fe municipality had 4,851 residents. Most of the people living in Santa Fe have a mixed background.

  • 97.40% were Mestizo (people of mixed European and Indigenous heritage).
  • 0.80% were Indigenous (native people).
  • 0.33% were Black or Afro-Honduran (people of African heritage).
