Santa Maria is part of the larger Brownsville–Harlingen metropolitan area.

Where is Santa Maria Located?
Santa Maria is found in the southwestern part of Cameron County. It is located at coordinates 26°4′41″N 97°50′53″W / 26.07806°N 97.84806°W. A main road, U.S. Route 281, goes through the community. This road leads southeast about 27 miles (43 km) to Brownsville. It also goes west about 26 miles (42 km) to Hidalgo.
The community is very close to the Rio Grande river. This river forms the border between Mexico and the United States. Santa Maria covers a total land area of about 0.63 square kilometers (0.24 square miles). There is no water area within the CDP.
