What Does "Xenacoj" Mean?
The name Xenacoj has changed over many years. In 1625, a friar named Thomas Gage called it Sinacao. Later, in 1717, another friar called it Xencoc.
In other old papers, it was written as Senacoc or Xinacó. Finally, in the early 1900s, it became Xenacoj.
The name comes from two words:
- "Xe" means "under" or "beneath".
- "Nacoj" is the name of a hill.
So, Xenacoj means "under the Nacoj hill". Another idea is that "Na" means "mouth" and "Coj" means "lion".
A Look Back in Time: History of Santo Domingo Xenacoj
Santo Domingo Xenacoj is in a valley. Spanish explorers called this area "Valle de Sacatepéquez" in the 1520s. This valley was surrounded by other areas. To the west was the valley of Xilotepeque. To the north were Mixco and las Vacas. The Chiquimula province was to the south and east.
In the 1620s and 1630s, an Irish friar named Thomas Gage traveled through America. In his 1648 book, he described the town as having a "warm climate."
A historian named Domingo Juarros wrote about the area in 1766. He said that the towns of Chimaltenango and Sacatepéquez tried to join together. However, it did not work. They stayed separate until Guatemala became independent from Spain in 1821.
