Sapzurro is a small, quiet town located right on the Caribbean Sea. You can find it in the very northwest corner of Colombia. It's part of the Municipality of Acandí in the Chocó Department. The closest town is Capurganá, which is a bit more popular. Sapzurro is also very close to the border with Panama, right across from a Panamanian town called La Miel.

History of Sapzurro

Sapzurro was started in 1889 by two Afro-Colombian settlers, Gumercindo Medrano and Juana Caraballo. They came from the Barú Peninsula in Colombia. Later, other families arrived, like Feliciano Berrío and Caridad Casiano, and Juan de Dios Meza and Bonifacia Bravo. Eliseo Zúñiga (who was Cuna), Mariano Pereira, and Asención Pertúz also joined them. Most of these early settlers came from a place called Bocachica. These families are still a big part of the community today.

Traveling to Sapzurro

You can take a ferry from the Antonio Roldán Betancourt Airport (near Apartadó Town) to Capurganá. Another popular way is to take a boat from Turbo to Capurganá. Many people traveling between Colombia and Panama use this route. Once you reach Capurganá, you can either walk or take a smaller boat called a panga to the little port of Sapzurro.

Traveling from Sapzurro

The first city you reach in Panama from Sapzurro is Puerto Obaldia. You can get there by boat from Capurganá or Sapzurro in about 45 minutes. If you want to fly within Colombia, there are flights from Medellín at the Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport. Airlines like ADA and Searca offer these flights.

Sapzurro has a tropical savanna climate. This means the average temperature is always above 18 °C (64 °F) every month of the year. It also has a clear dry season. The driest month gets less than 60mm (2.36 in) of rain. This type of climate is known as "Aw" in the Köppen Climate Classification system.

The average temperature for the whole year in Sapzurro is about 81.0 °F (27.2 °C). May is usually the warmest month, with an average temperature of 82.0 °F (27.8 °C). January is typically the coolest month, with an average temperature of 80.0 °F (26.7 °C).

People of Sapzurro

There are about 270 people living in Sapzurro. Most of them share one of two main last names. The community is mainly made up of descendants of African people. Their ancestors were brought to the Americas by the Spanish colonizers a long time ago.

Past Security Challenges

In the past, there were some security challenges in the area. For example, in June 1999, there was a brief period when safety was a concern in the border settlement of Sapzurro. However, these situations are part of the past.

What Does Sapzurro Mean?

The name "Sapzurro" comes from the ancient dialect of the Kuna people. In their language, it means "Bahia Profunda," which translates to "deep bay."
