Sara Hossain is a lawyer from Bangladesh. She works as a barrister in the highest court of Bangladesh, called the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. She is also the leader of the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST). This group helps people get legal help when they cannot afford it.
Sara Hossain is well-known for fighting for women's rights in Bangladesh. She has helped create new laws to protect women. She was a lawyer in an important court case where the Supreme Court agreed to use international human rights laws to help people. She also challenges unfair religious rulings that can harm women and girls. In 2016, she received the International Women of Courage Award from the United States.

Early Life and Family
Sara Hossain is the oldest daughter of Kamal Hossain, a famous leader, and Hameeda Hossain, who works for human rights. Her father's family comes from Barisal in Bangladesh. Her mother's family is from Sindh, Pakistan.
Education and Her Work
Sara Hossain studied law at Wadham College, Oxford in England. She earned her degrees in 1988. After that, she became a barrister at Middle Temple.
In 1992, she started working in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. Later, in 2008, she moved to the Appellate Division. From 1997 to 2003, Sara Hossain worked as a Legal Officer for INTERIGHTS. There, she helped with human rights cases in different courts around the world.
Today, Sara Hossain is a partner at the law firm Dr. Kamal Hossain and Associates. In 2018, the United Nations Human Rights Council asked her to lead a team. This team looked into the killing of many Palestinians by the Israeli army. In 2022, she was chosen to lead another UN team. This team investigated violence against women during the 2022 Iran protests.
Groups She Works With
Besides BLAST, Sara Hossain is part of other important groups. She is a member of the Executive Committee of Ain o Salish Kendra, a human rights group in Dhaka. She used to be on the board of the South Asia Women's Fund.
She has also served as a Commissioner for the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ). Currently, she is a member of the Human Rights Committee of the International Law Association (ILA). She is also on the Advisory Committee of the Women's International Coalition on Gender Justice (WICG). Sara Hossain is a well-known person in the world of human rights.
Awards and Achievements
In 2016, Sara Hossain received the International Women of Courage Award. The US Secretary of State, John Kerry, gave her this award. He praised her for "empowering women and girls and for giving voice to the voiceless in Bangladesh."
She was also named a "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum in 2008. In 2007, the Asia Society in New York called her an "Asia 21 Fellow." She won the Anannya Top Ten Awards in 2005. She also received the Human Rights Lawyer Award from The Lawyers Committee for Human Rights.
Personal Life
Sara Hossain is married to David Bergman. He is a British human rights activist and a journalist. He is known for his reports on war crimes during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
