Cecilia Harrison was born in 1863 in Holywood, County Down, Ireland. Her family was quite wealthy. She was related to some important historical figures. These included Henry Joy McCracken, a leader in the Society of United Irishmen, and Mary Ann McCracken, who fought against slavery.

When Cecilia was ten, her father passed away. Her family then moved to London, England. She went to school at Queens College in London. There, she won a silver medal for her painting. She also studied art at the famous Slade School of Fine Art from 1878 to 1885. She even won a special scholarship there. To learn more, she traveled to places like Paris, Italy, and Amsterdam.

In 1889, Cecilia moved to Dublin, Ireland. She quickly became one of Ireland's best portrait artists. A portrait is a painting of a person.
