Sarah M. Whiting (born 1964) is an American architect, a person who designs buildings. She is also a critic, meaning she writes about and evaluates architecture. Sarah Whiting is currently the Dean (the head) and Josep Lluís Sert Professor of Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design. She is also a co-founder of an architecture company called WW Architecture, which she started with her husband, Ron Witte. Before this, she was the Dean and William Ward Watkin Professor of Architecture at Rice School of Architecture.
Early Life and Education
Sarah Whiting was born in 1964, along with her twin brother. Her father, Charles G. Whiting, was a professor of French literature at Northwestern University. Her mother, Monique, was from France.
Sarah first became interested in architecture when she was in eighth grade. Her teacher in Evanston, Illinois, asked students to choose a future job and write a report about it. Sarah chose to learn about a local architect. She went to Evanston Township High School and graduated in 1982.
After high school, Sarah went to Yale University. There, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in architectural, urban history, and theory. She also worked as an editor for the arts section of the Yale Daily News, which is the university's newspaper. Later, she earned a Master of Architecture degree from Princeton University in 1990. She also received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the History and Theory of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2001.
Career Highlights
Sarah Whiting has worked in the offices of famous architects like Peter Eisenman and Michael Graves. She also worked at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, where she helped design the Euralille master plan. This was a big project to plan a new city area. She also helped with a book called SMLXL.
Along with her husband, Ron Witte, Sarah co-founded their own architecture firm, WW Architecture. This company is now located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Sarah has also taught at many universities. These include Harvard University, Princeton University, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Florida. She taught classes to both undergraduate and graduate students about modern city planning and ideas in architecture.
On July 1, 2019, Sarah Whiting was named the Dean and Professor of Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. This was a big achievement because she became the first female dean in the school's history. She took over from Mohsen Mostafavi. Her special teaching position is named after Josep Lluís Sert.

Sarah Whiting is married to Ron Witte. He is also an architect and helped her start WW Architecture. Ron Witte has taught at the Rice University School of Architecture. He is currently a Visiting Professor of Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
Sarah has a twin brother named Alex Whiting. He works as a lawyer and currently leads investigations for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor's Office. He also taught at Harvard Law School for several years. Sarah also has a sister named Cécile and another brother named Peter.
