A Look Back in Time

The Saugerties Lighthouse was built in 1869. It took the place of an older lighthouse from 1838. This new lighthouse helped ships navigate the Hudson River.

The United States Coast Guard used to operate the lighthouse. Their service there ended in 1954. For a while, the lighthouse was not used.

A man named Abraham Persons was a lighthouse keeper in 1835. His job was to keep the light burning brightly. He earned $350 for his work that year.

What Happens There Today?

Today, the Saugerties Lighthouse is managed by a group called the Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy. This non-profit group bought the lighthouse in 1986. They worked hard to fix it up and make it beautiful again.

The conservancy takes care of a nature trail. This trail leads right to the lighthouse. You can walk along it and enjoy nature.

The lighthouse is now a unique place to visit. It even has two bed and breakfast rooms. People can stay overnight right inside the lighthouse!

You can also take public tours of the lighthouse. There is a small museum inside too. It shows old items from the lighthouse's past. You can learn about how it was restored. The museum also shares stories about the Saugerties waterfront.

The Saugerties Light is recognized as a Historic Light Station. It is listed by the US Coast Guard. It is also on the National Park Service's list of lighthouses to visit.

Lighthouse Postcards

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History has a cool collection. It includes many souvenir postcards of lighthouses. Some of these postcards show the Saugerties Light. They are available to view online.
