Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Savior (or Saviour) refers to someone who helps or rescues others from danger or difficult situations. It can also mean someone who helps people find a way to be safe or free from big problems, often in a spiritual sense. Many different religions have a concept of a Savior, but they understand this idea in different ways.

What is a Savior?

A savior is like a hero who comes to the rescue. This person might save someone from a physical danger, like a fire or an accident. But often, especially in religions, a savior helps people with bigger, more spiritual problems.

This idea of "saving" can mean different things. It might mean being saved from sadness, from mistakes, or from a difficult future. It's about finding Salvation, which means being made safe, whole, or free from harm.

Saviors in Different Religions

Many religions around the world have special figures they consider saviors. These figures are often seen as guides, protectors, or leaders who bring hope and help to their followers.

Christianity's Savior: Jesus

In Christianity, the main savior is Jesus. Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God and is also called the Christ. They believe he came to Earth to save people from their sins and to offer them a way to have eternal life. The Bible, in the Gospel of Matthew (chapter 1, verse 21), says he will "save his people from their sins."

Judaism's Belief: The Messiah

Judaism has a different belief. Jewish people do not see Jesus as their savior. Instead, they believe in a future leader called the Messiah. They believe the Messiah will be a human leader who will bring peace and justice to the world. They are still waiting for the Messiah to arrive.

Islam's Mahdi

In Islam, some Muslims believe in a future leader known as the Mahdi. The Mahdi is seen as a person who will appear before the end of the world. He is expected to lead people to justice and fairness, bringing a time of peace and righteousness.

Hindu Saviors: Shiva, Vishnu, and Devi

Hinduism is a very old religion with many gods and goddesses. Some of these deities are seen as saviors. For example, Shiva is sometimes called "The Destroyer," but he also helps remove evil and brings new beginnings. Vishnu is known as "The Preserver" and is believed to protect the universe and restore balance when things go wrong. Devi, the Divine Mother, is also seen as a powerful protector and savior who helps her followers.
