Sawyer started in 1911. It was named after William Perry Sawyer. The North Yakima and Valley Railway Company gave it this name.

The railroad bought the land for Sawyer from William Perry Sawyer. This area was mainly a place where train tracks met. In 1931, several companies helped plan out the town. These included the First Security and Loan Company, the Yakima Fruit Growers Association, and the William Sawyer Fruit Company.
