What Was Saxe-Hildburghausen?
Saxe-Hildburghausen was an independent duchy (a territory ruled by a duke). It existed from 1680 to 1826. Even though it was very small, it had its own ruler and government.
In 1684, the duchy moved its main city, or capital, from Heldburg to Hildburghausen. This is how it got its name, Saxe-Hildburghausen.
Key Moments in History
A Royal Wedding and Oktoberfest
In 1810, a princess from Saxe-Hildburghausen, named Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, married Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria. He later became the king of Bavaria.
This royal wedding is famous because it led to the start of the Oktoberfest. This big festival is still held every year in Munich, Germany.
Changes in the Duchy
In 1826, the Ernestine duchies were reorganized. This happened because the ruler of another duchy, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, passed away without any children to take his place.
The duke of Saxe-Hildburghausen agreed to give up his duchy. In return, he became the Duke of Saxe-Altenburg. The land of Hildburghausen was then given to the duchy of Saxe-Meiningen. This change helped the duke gain a higher social rank.
Later, in 1868, Hildburghausen became one of four districts within the duchy of Saxe-Meiningen. Its borders stayed mostly the same until 1993.
Dukes of Saxe-Hildburghausen
Here are the dukes who ruled Saxe-Hildburghausen:
- Ernst II (1675 – 1715)
- Ernst Frederick I (1715 – 1724)
- Ernst Frederick II (1724 – 1745)
- Ernst Frederick III (1745 – 1780)
- Frederick (1780 – 1825)
After 1825, the duchy became part of Saxe-Meiningen.
