The scarlet percher (scientific name: Diplacodes haematodes) is a beautiful type of dragonfly. It belongs to a family of dragonflies called Libellulidae. These amazing insects are known for their bright colors and quick flight.

About the Scarlet Percher

The scarlet percher is a small but very striking dragonfly. Its wingspan is about 60 millimeters (2.4 inches), and its body length is around 35 millimeters (1.4 inches). Even though it's small, its vibrant colors make it easy to spot!

What They Look Like

Male scarlet perchers are a brilliant, fiery red. This bright color helps them stand out. Females, on the other hand, are a yellow-ochre color. This means they are a yellowish-brown.

Both males and females have special coloring on their wings. Females have a yellowish tint near the outer parts of their wings. Males have a similar color, but it's closer to the base of their wings.

Where They Live

Scarlet perchers live in many places. You can find them across most of Australia, but not in Tasmania. They also live in Timor, New Guinea, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia.

These dragonflies love warm, sunny places. They are often found near water, like rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes. They enjoy areas where the sun shines directly on them.

Their Habits

Scarlet perchers are quite careful and a bit shy. They often prefer to rest on hot rocks instead of on twigs or leaves. This might be because the warm rocks help them stay warm. They are a common sight in their preferred habitats.
