Discovering Schererville's Past

Long before Indiana became a state, the area where Schererville now stands was known as the "Crossroads." This was because several Native American trails met here. Later, these trails became important routes for settlers traveling west in their wagons.

Who Founded Schererville?

One of these settlers was Nicholas Scherer. He was born in 1830 in Germany and came to the U.S. in 1846. In 1865, he arrived at this spot near the southern tip of Lake Michigan. He then founded the community that was named after him.

Modern Crossroads of the Nation

Today, Schererville is still a major crossroads. Modern highways like U.S. Highways 41 and 30 cross paths here. Nearby are even bigger roads, including I-80/94 and I-65. These are main routes that connect different parts of the country. This is why Schererville's slogan is "Crossroads of the Nation."
