Schnapps facts for kids
Schnapps is a type of strong drink made using a special process called distillation. The word schnapps comes from the German word schnaps.
What is German Schnapps?
Traditional German schnapps are clear drinks. They are made by distilling, or purifying, liquids from fermented grains, roots, and fruits. Fermentation is a natural process where sugar turns into alcohol.
German schnapps usually has no sugar or other flavors added. It looks and tastes a bit like vodka, but with light fruit flavors. These drinks usually have about 40% alcohol. This means that 40 out of every 100 parts of the drink is alcohol.
What is American Schnapps?
There is also an American type of schnapps. This kind of schnapps is a liqueur. A liqueur is a sweet alcoholic drink. American schnapps has sugar and extra flavors added. These flavors can be things like peach, mint, or butterscotch.
The alcohol content of American schnapps is usually around 20%. This is less than the German-style schnapps.
