Schola Cantorum

The Schola Cantorum de Paris is a special music school in Paris, France. Its name, Schola Cantorum, means 'singers' school' in Latin. It's located in a famous part of Paris called the Latin Quarter. This school was started in 1894 by three musicians: Charles Bordes, Alexandre Guilmant, and Vincent d'Indy. They wanted to create a different kind of music school compared to the main one in Paris, which focused a lot on opera.

History of the Schola Cantorum

The Schola Cantorum was founded in 1894. It officially opened its doors on October 15, 1896. The founders wanted it to be a different option from the Paris Conservatoire, another big music school.

Alexandre Guilmant, a talented organ player, was the first director of the Schola. Later, Vincent d'Indy took over as director. D'Indy created the school's unique study plan. Students learned about older music styles. This included music from the late Baroque and early Classical periods. They also studied Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony.

The school encouraged students to learn strong musical techniques. It was less about being completely original at first. Some of its best students, like Albéric Magnard, Albert Roussel, Déodat de Séverac, and Pierre de Bréville, became very famous. The school first started in an area called Montparnasse. In 1900, it moved to its current home. This building used to be a convent in the Quartier Latin.
