Schwechat is a city located southeast of Vienna in Austria. It is well-known for the Vienna International Airport and for its local beer, Schwechater. The city is also home to large refineries owned by the Austrian national oil company, OMV. Refineries are places where crude oil is turned into useful products like gasoline.

Where is Schwechat Located?

Schwechat gets its name from the Schwechat River. This river flows right through the middle of the town. The city is divided into smaller areas called Katastralgemeinde. These areas include Kledering, Mannswörth, Rannersdorf, and Schwechat itself.

What is the History of Schwechat?

Schwechat has a long and interesting history. It was once home to a Roman settlement called Ala Nova. The city was first officially mentioned in a document way back in 1334.

Important Moments in Schwechat's Past

In 1683, an important meeting happened in Schwechat. Emperor Leopold I met with Jan Sobieski here after Vienna was freed from a siege. An obelisk, which is a tall, narrow monument, remembers this event. Later, in October 1848, imperial troops won a battle against Hungarian rebels in this area.

How Did Schwechat Grow?

In 1724, a textile factory opened in Schwechat. The city grew a lot during Austria's industrialisation in the 1800s. Many companies started then are still around today. For example, the Dreher Brewery was founded in 1796.

Schwechat officially became a city in 1924. In 1938, it became part of Vienna. During World War II, the city's oil refinery was a target for bombs from the Allied forces. This was part of their plan to stop Germany's oil supply. The Heinkel aircraft factory in Schwechat was also bombed.

Schwechat became an independent city again in 1954. Since 2017, it has been part of the Bruck an der Leitha District. This happened when the Wien-Umgebung district was closed.
