The Scinax chiquitanus is a type of frog that belongs to the tree frog family, Hylidae. You can find these frogs in the Amazon rainforest areas of Bolivia and Peru. Some scientists think the frogs in Peru might be a slightly different species.

What Does the Chiquitanus Frog Look Like?

Adult male frogs are about 28 to 33 millimeters (1.1 to 1.3 inches) long. Female frogs are a bit bigger, measuring 32 to 36 millimeters (1.3 to 1.4 inches) from their snout to their rear end. Their snout, which is their nose area, is rounded.

These frogs have a clear eardrum, called a tympanum. Their skin is smooth or has a very fine, bumpy texture. During the day, both male and female frogs are dark brown. But at night, the males change to a yellowish-gold or orange color. Females become beige or light brown.

Their color is usually the same all over their body. However, they might have small dark spots on their sides. The back of their thighs might have a dark brown stripe or some lightly colored spots. Their eyes have a pale gold iris.

How Do Chiquitanus Frogs Communicate?

Male Scinax chiquitanus frogs make a special sound to attract females. This sound is a short, rattling "buzz." Each buzz lasts for about 0.08 to 0.10 seconds. They repeat these calls quickly, about 20 to 45 times every minute. The main sound of their call is around 2000 Hertz, which is a high-pitched sound.

Where Does the Chiquitanus Frog Live?

The Scinax chiquitanus frog lives in the Amazon rainforest. They prefer wet forest areas that are close to lower lands. You can find them at elevations below 450 meters (1,476 feet).

These frogs are nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. They are also arboreal, which means they live in trees and bushes. Males call out from plants in the water or from bushes sticking out of temporary ponds. These ponds are where they go to breed and lay their eggs.

Is the Chiquitanus Frog Safe?

The Scinax chiquitanus is a common type of frog. While they might lose some of their living space in certain areas, this is not a big problem for the species as a whole. Many of these frogs live in special protected areas, which helps keep them safe.
