History of Scipio
Scipio was officially started in 1839. It was named after a famous Roman general called Scipio Africanus. He was known for his military skills and for defeating Hannibal during the Second Punic War.
Where is Scipio Located?
Scipio is found in the northwestern part of Jennings County. It sits right in the middle of Geneva Township.
A main road, Indiana State Road 7, goes through the center of Scipio. This road connects Scipio to other towns. If you go southeast for about 7 miles (11 km), you'll reach North Vernon. If you travel northwest for about 14 miles (23 km), you'll get to Columbus.
The total area of the Scipio CDP is about 1.17 square miles (3.0 square kilometers). A small part of this area, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 square kilometers), is water. A stream called Sand Creek flows along the northern edge of Scipio. This creek eventually flows into the East Fork of the White River.
