Scipio is a town in Utah, United States. It is known for its quiet, rural setting. The town is named after Scipio Kenner, a lawyer who helped the early settlers.

Where is Scipio located?

Scipio is in an oval-shaped area called Round Valley. It is about 37 miles (60 km) south of Nephi. The town sits where two major roads meet: Interstate 15 and U.S. Route 50.

The nearest town is Holden, about 15 miles (24 km) southwest. To the east of Scipio are the Valley Mountains. Their highest peak is around 8,189 feet (2,496 meters) tall. South of Scipio are the Pahvant Mountains, which rise to over 10,000 feet (3,048 meters).

Scipio has a climate with hot summers. This type of climate is called "hot-summer humid continental." Summers can be very warm, with the highest recorded temperature being 107°F (41.7°C) in July 1998. Winters can be very cold. The lowest recorded temperature was -40°F (-40°C) in January 1937.

The town gets some rain and snow throughout the year. Snowfall is heaviest in December and January.

History of Scipio

Scipio was founded in 1859. It was first called "Round Valley" and later "Graball." The name "Scipio" came from Scipio Africanus Kenner. He was a young lawyer who helped the early settlers get legal ownership of their land.

In 1861, a branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized in the town. There was also once a place called Fort Scipio here.

Historic Buildings

Scipio has several old homes built in the pioneer style. Some of these houses are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites.

  • The Thuesen-Petersen House

The Scipio Town Hall was built in 1935. It is also on the Historic Register. This building serves as the town hall and a meeting place for community events. It also has a museum for local history and a Senior Citizens Center.

South of Scipio, you can find the Pharo Village. This is an ancient site from the Fremont culture. It shows how people lived in this area long ago.
