Scripps Hall, also known today as the Pasadena Waldorf School, is a large and beautiful house. It is built in the American Craftsman or Arts and Crafts style. You can find it in the hills of the San Gabriel Mountains, in Altadena, California, United States.
This special house was built in 1904. It was the main building of the big Scripps Estate. Today, Scripps Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical building that should be protected.

The Story of Scripps Hall
Scripps Hall was built by a man named William Armiger Scripps. He was a very important person in the area. The house is a three-story building designed in the Arts and Crafts style. The architect who designed it was Charles W. Buchanan.
In 1904, while his big mansion was being built, William Scripps lived in a smaller house nearby. He planted many citrus and olive trees on his land. This large property was known as the 'Scripps Estate'. It was located in a community then called North Pasadena.
From Home to School
After William Scripps passed away, Scripps Hall went to his grandson. Later, part of the property was divided into smaller pieces. In 1979, the house was in danger of being torn down. Luckily, a group called the Altadena Heritage Association helped save it.
They helped sell the historic home to the Pasadena Waldorf School. This school is part of a worldwide network of Waldorf Schools. These schools have a special way of teaching children.
Why Scripps Hall is Special
Scripps Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is important because it shows how the area grew and developed. It was designed by a well-known local architect, C. W. Buchanan. It is one of only two of his major works still standing in Altadena.
The house is also special because it looks almost exactly as it did when it was built. It was also home to the Scripps family, who were very important in the region for a long time. Scripps Hall is a great example of the large estates that once lined Altadena's "Millionaire's Row."
Who Was William A. Scripps?
William Armiger Scripps came from a very interesting family. His father, James Mogg Scripps, was a famous bookbinder in England. William came to America in 1844 with his father and six siblings.
William grew up on a farm in Rushville, Illinois. Later, he moved to Detroit, Michigan. There, he and his brother George started a print shop. Many of his other brothers and sisters, like E. W. Scripps and James E. Scripps, owned and ran big newspapers across the country.
A New Start in California
After his print shop was destroyed by fire, William Scripps moved to Southern California. His family's newspaper business, the E. W. Scripps Company, helped him financially. He spent some time with his siblings in La Jolla, California. Then, in 1904, he moved to Altadena and built Scripps Hall.
William Scripps had a sister named Ellen Browning Scripps. She was also involved with the family's newspaper company. Ellen became a very important philanthropist. This means she gave a lot of money to good causes. She helped start many famous places, like the Scripps Research Institute, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Scripps College, and the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden. William also helped his community. He founded 'Scripps Home' in Altadena, which was a place for elderly people to live.
