Scuffletown is located near important historical spots along the Rapidan River. These spots include "Wilhoit's Mill" and "White's Ford." People knew these places well in the 1800s.
White's Ford History
"White's Ford" might have been named after a man named John White. He was born in 1695 and died in 1787. John White came from a place called Leicestershire in England.
On July 1, 1767, John White bought more land. This happened when a large area called the Octonia Grant was sold. The Octonia Grant was 24,000 acres big. Its western edge is marked by the Octonia Stone.
The Octonia Grant Sale
James Madison, Sr. was in charge of the sale. He was the father of James Madison, who later became a president of the United States.
John White bought Lot #4 of this land. It was 356 acres. He paid 75 pounds for it. He paid 49 pounds in cash first. By June 22, 1769, he had paid the rest to Mr. Madison.
A shallow crossing point over the Rapidan River in this area became known as White's Ford.
White's Ford Today
Today, White's Ford is in the very northwest corner of Orange County. It's where three counties meet: Madison, Greene, and Orange. Greene County was formed from Orange County in 1838.
An 1864 map by Gilmore, kept at the Library of Congress, shows this location. White's Ford was also mentioned in records of army movements during the American Civil War.
Wilhoit's Mill
The "Wilhoit's Mill" might have been named after Curtis Wilhoit. He lived from 1809 to 1885.
