The Rapidan and Rappahannock Rivers. The Rapidan is the river to the south, joining the Rappahannock.

The Rapidan River is an important river in north-central Virginia, United States. It flows for about 88 miles (142 km) and is the biggest stream that flows into the Rappahannock River. These two rivers meet just west of the city of Fredericksburg. The Rapidan River starts in Shenandoah National Park, where two smaller streams, Mill Prong and Laurel Prong, come together near Rapidan Camp. This is about 3 miles (5 km) south of Big Meadows. The river also forms the border between Orange County and Culpeper and Madison Counties.

River's Name

The name "Rapidan" is a mix of two words: "rapids" and "Ann." It was named after Queen Anne of England. Long ago, people called it the Rapid Ann River because of its fast-moving sections.

A Place in History

The Rapidan River was a very important location during the American Civil War. Many big battles and events happened near its banks. Places like Ely's Ford, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Kelly's Ford, and the Battle of the Wilderness are all close by. The river's location made it a key area for armies to cross and fight.

Protecting the River

Parts of the lower Rapidan River are protected today. This means that efforts are made to keep the river and its surroundings natural and healthy. The Rapidan River is also known for its good fishing. It is listed as one of America's best trout streams by a group called Trout Unlimited. In the early 2000s, people tried to get the upper part of the river recognized as a special "Exceptional Waterway" to give it even more protection, but this was not approved at the time.
